The information revolution offers exciting possibilities to save energy by "dematerialising" physical goods and processes. Tele-working, video conferencing, internet shopping, e-invoicing and downloading of content have potential to reduce carbon emissions. The virtual world is far from being a miracle cure, however, as our computers, servers and peripherals require growing amounts of energy and are made from non-recyclable materials.
